Balakumar, as he was affectionately known, was born on 29 June 1950 in Karampon, Sri Lanka to late Lourthamma and Mariampillai.

He was the loving husband of Calista Ranjini,

Father of Kevin and Tiffany.

He was also the loving brother of Marcellas Nicholas (Sri Lanka), Vivina Mariarani (Sri Lanka), Philomina Mariamani (France) and Cyril Marianayagam (France). 

He was the loving son-in-law of late Mary Philomina and Jospeh Wilfred (Kalyani Stores, Jaffna),

Loving brother-in-law of Vaseeharan (London ), Rathi (Jaffna), Thayaparan (Jaffna), Ponrose (Norway), Lawrence (Canada) Sri Thaninayagam (India), late Aloysius, Sylvester, Irene, Jeyarajah, Korothy, Kelman, Shanthi, Leela and Selvi.
